Drinking
Straw Anniversary - Fun
Fact
The drinking straw was patented in 1888 by Marvin Stone, who ordinarily
manufactured paper cigarette holders. He designed an 8 1/2-in.-long
straw, made
of spiral-wound, paraffin-coated, Manila paper. He selected the
diameter
specifically to prevent lemon seeds from becoming stuck in the straw.
By 1890,
his factory produced more straws than cigarette holders! Before
Stone’s
invention, people ordinarily used rye grass straws to drink beverages.
Today,
most straws are made of plastic.
