National Pancake Week - February 14th -20th
Legend has it that women made pancakes in order to use up their cooking fats, which were forbidden during Lent (the Christian period of limited fasting prior to Easter). One story tells of a woman who became so engrossed in making her pancakes that she lost track of time. When the church bell rang, she ran across town to the church with her apron on and a skillet in hand! Today, the citizens of Liberal, Kan., hold an annual pancake race, just as many in England do. It has become tradition that the woman who reaches the church steps first is rewarded with a kiss from the church bell-ringer. The kiss has been dubbed “The Kiss of Peace.”
